Bell rings the pay-TV changes with budget streaming venture

Bell Canada is launching a 'no-frills', budget app-based live TV service named 'Alt TV' enabling customers to watch regular TV programming on smartphones, computers and other streaming devices. Alt TV is being offered initially to Bell's internet subscribers in Ontario and Quebec, with the Atlantic provinces and Manitoba scheduled for launch soon after, whilst the service may be expanded to customers without a Bell internet subscription at a later date. The Globe & Mail cited Bell's president Wade Oosterman as saying that Alt TV is aimed at winning pay-TV customers who might not own a TV set but still want to watch live programmes on their online devices. Alt TV will be available only in regions where Bell has a broadcast licence and content rights, whilst Oosterman stressed that the service is delivered over Bell's own private managed network, not the open Internet.
