Northwestel – part of Bell Canada Enterprises (BCE) – will triple its fixed internet speeds and double its monthly data volume caps for residential users whilst slashing costs of existing services in Iqaluit on 1 October 2018, reports Nunatsiaq News. The new broadband service, branded ‘Tamarmik Nunaliit’, will be rolled out to all other communities across the vast far-north territory of Nunavut by the end of 2019, as Northwestel implements a part-government-funded project in partnership with satellite operator Telesat to boost bandwidth to the entire region.

Currently, the fastest fixed internet connection Northwestel offers to Nunavut users is 5Mbps, costing CAD179.95 (USD138) per month; this package will remain available at a lower cost of CAD80 a month, whilst a new package will offer 15Mbps at CAD129.95 a month. There will now be an option for a monthly data cap of 100GB.

Northwestel is also preparing to offer 4G LTE mobile services in all 25 far-flung Nunavut communities by end-2019. Its competitor SSI Micro (Qiniq) already reaches 15 Nunavut communities with wireless voice and data services, and is continuing its expansion, the news report added.
