Canada’s Freedom Mobile has begun enabling its recently-acquired 700MHz spectrum – starting in Calgary – improving network coverage and enhancing indoor LTE signal, its parent Shaw Communications announced in a press release. Shaw closed the acquisition of 700MHz and 2500MHz licences from Quebecor (Videotron) in July 2017, supporting network upgrades in Southern Ontario, British Columbia and Alberta. Freedom’s introduction of ‘Extended Range LTE’ (including LTE-700 coverage) follows its rollout of VoLTE, which is now available nationally on select LG, Samsung, Sony, Motorola and Alcatel devices purchased directly from Freedom Mobile, with additional handsets lined up for VoLTE activation in the coming months including Apple devices. Additionally, Freedom has launched Rich Communication Services (RCS) for Android users, enabling them to hold group chats, see when someone is typing, and view read receipts by transmitting messages over a data connection.
