Eastlink expands gigabit availability

Canadian cableco Eastlink has given an update on its ongoing investment in high speed fibre-optic networks including expansion of gigabit-capable internet services, in response to demand for 'real-time entertainment and connected home technologies'. Lee Bragg, Eastlink CEO, said: 'For years, we have been providing gigabit speeds and higher to our larger business customers through our advanced business network. With real-time entertainment like video streaming, music, gaming and emerging connected home technologies driving exponential internet growth, it's time to bring this kind of internet service to a wider range of customers, including residential customers.'

Working with technology partners Cisco Systems and ARRIS, Halifax-based Eastlink said it has recently invested CAD20 million (USD15.1 million) in 'fibre-optic network and advanced technologies'. Jeffrey Maddox of Cisco Canada, added: 'Over the past decade, Eastlink has set the pace for internet performance in urban, suburban and hundreds of rural communities across the country.' Eastlink's premium 1Gbps-capable internet service has been available in certain parts of Nova Scotia (NS) and Prince Edward Island since 2015, and the quadruple-play operator has recently introduced the gigabit service to the communities of Guysborough (NS), Port Hawksbury (NS), Kirkland Lake (Ontario), Picton (Ontario), and Oliver (British Columbia).
