Rogers tests 8Gbps symmetrical fibre broadband for planned summer launch

Canada's Rogers Communications has announced the successful testing of 8Gbps symmetrical fibre broadband access speeds in lab and customer trials, under a plan to launch the new download and upload speeds commercially 'in summer 2022 for customers in select areas across Ontario, New Brunswick and Newfoundland'. Rogers claims that the launch will more than double 'the fastest published internet speeds of any major provider in Canada' (with rival Bell Canada having earlier this month claimed a speed record for major providers with the launch of a 3Gbps symmetrical fibre broadband service).

Commenting on the upcoming 8Gbps fibre option, Robert Depatie, Rogers' COO of Home and Business, stated: 'Customers will be able to explore streaming TV, online game play, videoconferencing, immersive virtual reality and more, like never before.' Rogers is aiming to introduce a 10Gbps fibre service at a later date.
