Canada's leading rural fixed-wireless broadband provider Xplornet Communications has announced that it will invest over CAD500 million (USD375 million) in five years to deliver hybrid fibre-wireless 5G services 'nationally to rural Canadians', enabled by the federal government's Accelerated Investment Incentive. CEO Allison Lenehan stated that Xplornet will double its rural internet access speeds to 50Mbps later this year, followed by 100Mbps speeds by the end of 2020, utilising Xplornet's 3500MHz spectrum and supported by new investments in a fibre backbone capable of delivering speeds of at least 1Gbps, adding that: '5G can enable amazing broadband services in rural Canada, unlike anything previously available'.
